Start a Grok Bot routine from a Microsoft Teams message

Beginner · How-to · Oct. 31, 2026

If your workplace runs on Microsoft Teams, your Bot doesn't have to wait for you to forward things. Since an Aug. 12 update, a Bot can build a routine that starts from a Teams message.

Before you start

Connect Teams first. Click Connect apps in the sidebar, search for Teams, add it and finish the Microsoft sign-in in your browser. Check that it shows under Installed.

On a work or school account, the sign-in may stop with a note that your Microsoft 365 admin has to approve the app. Trying again won't fix that. Send the approval link on that page to your IT admin, then connect again once they approve it.

Set up the routine

  1. Open a chat with the Bot that should do the work.
  2. Tell it, in one message, what to watch and what to do. Here's an example of our own: "When someone posts in the Sales channel in Teams asking for a quote, draft a reply with our current price sheet and send me the draft."
  3. Click the Bot's name at the top of the chat, open the Details tab and find Routines.
  4. Click the new routine and read When to run. It should describe the Teams trigger you asked for. If it doesn't, choose Edit and tell the Bot what to fix.
  5. Choose Test to try one run. A test does real work, so use a harmless example.

Keep it cheap

Every run spends usage, and a routine that runs often spends more. A routine that fires on every message in a busy channel can use up usage quickly. Ask for the narrowest trigger that does the job.

If nothing happens, check that the routine isn't Paused and that When to run shows the trigger you expect.
