MLH Global Hack Week pairs beginner Grok Bot challenges with Cursor Pro
Major League Hacking is running beginner Grok Bot challenges this week as part of Global Hack Week: Hacktoberfest, alongside a free Cursor Pro signup path for participants.
The event window is Oct. 9-15, 2026, according to MLH's challenge hub and the GHW open-source event page. The challenges page lists a Grok Bot track that starts with creating a first Bot and moves through teaching a skill and routine, a campus database job, a browser workflow, and a two-Bot handoff.
What the Grok Bot challenges ask for
MLH's Challenge 3, "Create Your First Grok Bot," is labeled Beginner, No Code, Setup. The page says: "Download or open Grok Bot and create your first persistent AI teammate." It tells participants each named Bot "can run tasks in its own cloud computer and keep its work available between conversations," and that the Bot is ready when its name appears in the sidebar.
Challenge 4, "Teach Grok Bot Your First Task," is Intermediate, No Code. Its opener says: "Give your Bot a skill and a routine." MLH's wording matches the product split: "A skill tells the Bot how to do a task. A routine tells it when to run that skill." The page tells participants to pick a public campus-style page when possible, never put a password in the skill, and ask the Bot to show results without sending, posting, or submitting anything by itself.
Challenge 5 asks the Bot to build a campus opportunities database from a public events page into Notion or Google Sheets, with five current events and source links. Challenge 6 is a browser workflow taught once and re-run with a new input. Challenge 7, "Run a Two-Bot Launch Relay," is Advanced, No Code, 60 minutes: a Source Editor builds a brief, then hands work to a Launch Producer. "Nothing is published or sent," the challenge page says.
Cursor Pro path and the Oct. 9 livestream
A separate beginner challenge, "Sign up for a Cursor Pro Account," tells participants to install Cursor, then "Use the promo code emailed to you from the MLH team to redeem a free Cursor Pro account," and to "manually upgrade your account to Cursor Pro in Billings & Invoices to take advantage of your free credits." Submit a screenshot of the Cursor Dashboard showing Pro was redeemed.
On Oct. 9, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. EDT (11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. CT), MLH hosted an online livestream titled "[GHW Hacktoberfest] Getting Started with Grok Bot & Cursor." The event page lists Fiona Whittington from SpaceXAI as the host, and says she would show pairing Cursor with Grok Bot to "build an entire internship stack from scratch." The same page now marks the event as ended. That location is open to ages 13 and up, including minors 13-18, students, and working professionals.
What to do with it
- If you are still inside the Oct. 9-15 window, open the MLH GHW challenges hub and start with Challenge 3, then 4. Use MLH's own challenge copy, not rumor threads about free codes.
- For Cursor Pro, use only the promo code MLH emailed you, then upgrade manually in Billing as the challenge page says. Do not invent eligibility beyond what MLH prints.
- Treat Challenge 4 and 7 as practice for stop signs: show results in chat, keep sends and publishes behind approval. See Stop signs and How do you plan a bot?.
