# Amazon blocks Grok Bots from shopping, and Musk says buy elsewhere

*News · Oct. 15, 2026*

Grok Bot users say Amazon has started blocking their Bots from shopping on the site, and Elon Musk has told them to take their business somewhere else.

"This happened when I tried to get my Grok Bot to order stuff for me on Amazon," Nic Cruz Patane posted on X at 10:21 p.m. CT Oct. 14, sharing the notice his Bot hit: "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed." He added, "My bots can no longer access Amazon for orders or anything."

Musk weighed in twice that night. "Just ask Grok Bot to find the best deal on the Internet for what you want. Doesn't need to come from Amazon," he wrote at 8:22 p.m. CT Oct. 14. "My Bot bought LEGO directly from the LEGO website no problem." At 12:24 a.m. CT Oct. 15 he posted, "Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal. There are far more purchasing websites than just Amazon!" That post had about 14.4 million views and more than 11,800 likes by about 11:48 a.m. CT Thursday.

Amazon has not commented publicly on Grok Bot specifically, as far as GG could find.

## What Amazon's terms say

Amazon's Conditions of Use, last updated Aug. 14, 2026, include an "Agents" section. It defines an agent as "any software or service that takes autonomous or semi-autonomous action on behalf of, or at the instruction of, any person or entity."

Under those terms, an agent must:

- Name itself in every web request by adding "Agent/[agent name]" to its user agent string, the label a browser sends to identify itself.

- Not hide that it's an agent, including by "mimicking the speed or pattern of human keystrokes" or by completing or getting around CAPTCHAs.

- Answer truthfully when asked whether it's a human or a computer.

- Not get around any measure meant to block or limit agents.

The terms also say, "At our sole discretion, we may limit, including by technical measures, whether and how any Agent accesses, uses, and interacts with Amazon Services."

Amazon's robots.txt file, which tells automated crawlers what they may not visit, lists user agents named "GrokBot" and "xAI-Grok" with "Disallow: /", meaning the whole site. The file does not say whether those names cover Grok Bot's browser.

## A pledge on purchase mistakes

Later that night, Musk quoted a user who said his Bot booked a flight. "I send a photo of my credit card and it did the entire process," X Freeze posted at 12:39 a.m. CT Oct. 15.

"This works well," Musk replied at 12:57 a.m. CT. "If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole." That post had about 1.77 million views and more than 11,200 likes by about 11:48 a.m. CT.

It's a post, not a published policy. As of Thursday morning, GG had found no terms page, claim process, dollar limit, or list of covered plans for that promise.

Bot payments with X Money or Stripe Link arrived in the official changelog's v0.70.2 entry, which GG [covered Oct. 14](/bot-pay-apps-approvals/). The same entry says a Bot checks your own messages for approval before an action it can't undo, such as buying.

> **What to do with it**
> - If a shopping routine suddenly fails on Amazon, this is the likely reason. Point the Bot at another retailer. Don't ask it to get around the block; Amazon's terms forbid that.
> - Skip the card photo. A picture of your card puts the full number in the chat. Use the built-in X Money or Stripe Link options from the [Oct. 14 story](/bot-pay-apps-approvals/) instead.
> - Keep buying behind a stop sign in your Bot's description ([Basics #3](/basics-stop-signs-approvals/)), so it asks before it spends.
> - Don't count on the "make you whole" post as coverage until there are published terms behind it.
