# Put a minus in front of the mail you don't want your Bot to read

*Tip · Nov. 7, 2026*

When you ask your Bot to search Gmail, automatic notices can crowd the results. Gmail search operators let you exclude a sender before the Bot starts reviewing matches. A busy sender can otherwise fill an early page of results and bury the message you wanted.

The fix is one character. Gmail treats a minus in front of a search word as "leave these out." You can say it to your Bot in plain words, or hand it the search yourself.

1. **Name the noise.** Think of the sender that buries everything: build alerts, store promotions, a group list. You only need the address or the domain.

2. **Ask with a minus.** For example: "Search my Gmail from the last two weeks, excluding GitHub notifications. Use newer_than:14d -from:notifications@github.com." You can stack more than one, like -from:alerts@yourbank.com -category:promotions.

3. **Add a time window.** newer_than:14d (or 7d or 2m for two months) keeps the search from reaching back years.

4. **Ask how many it found.** If the Bot says there are more results than one page, tell it to keep paging, or narrow the search again before it gives up.

5. **Save the habit.** If the same senders always get in the way, ask your Bot to remember them as senders to skip for this kind of search, unless you ask to include them.

The minus narrows the search results. It does not delete or archive mail, create a Gmail filter or change labels. Excluded messages stay in the mailbox.
