Grok Bot's new Primary Bot offers to do work before you ask
Grok Bot users can now name one Bot as their primary, and that Bot will look for work it can take off their plate and offer to do it without being asked, SpaceXAI said Thursday.
"Grok Bot can now suggest ways to help without you needing to ask," the official @bot account said in a post on X at 12:35 p.m. CT Oct. 1. The post had more than 3 million views by Friday afternoon, according to X.
In a follow-up post in the same thread, the account said the primary Bot "will spot work it can take off your plate and offer to handle it," that the feature would roll out "over the next few hours," and that "suggestions don't count against your usage."
SpaceXAI did not say whether the work a user accepts after a suggestion counts against the weekly allowance. As of Friday, the Grok Bot documentation did not mention Primary Bot, according to a review of nine documentation pages published by ProgressiveRobot, a British technology consultancy.
Screenshots of the iOS app published by TestingCatalog and described by ProgressiveRobot show two setup choices: "Use an existing Bot" or "Create Primary Bot." A new Primary Bot introduces itself as able to manage the user's other Bots and route tasks to the right one.
Aaron Makelky, who posts on X as @theaaron, said he made an existing chief-of-staff Bot his primary. He said the app added an icon to it and the Bot "immediately started looking across my project folders and tasks for things it could help" with.
The feature arrived the same week OpenAI launched its Dots agents.
Before you switch it on
A Bot that volunteers work can only act on what it can reach. Check these first.
- What it can see. All of your Bots share one cloud computer, its files, and its signed-in browser sessions. Whatever any Bot can open, your primary Bot can open.
- What stops for you. Grok Bot's Auto-review can require approval before risky actions. Add plain "Ask first" rules for sending, posting, deleting, and buying before the first suggestion lands.
- What it costs. Watch your usage page for the first week. If accepted suggestions eat the allowance, narrow what the Bot watches instead of turning the feature off.
If you already run a chief-of-staff Bot, promoting it keeps the context it has built. That is the path Makelky took.
