Musk says Grok Bot cost too much to serve as users hit limits early
Elon Musk said Nov. 1 that Grok Bot had been too expensive to serve for the revenue it brought in, after users reported their weekly usage meters hitting 100 percent days before their reset.
"The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue," Musk wrote in an X reply. He was answering an X user who asked for a Grok Bot usage reset because many people said their usage "ran out really fast this week."
Musk gave no figures. He did not say whether limits had been cut, by how much, or whether anyone's usage would be reset.
What outlets read into it. The Verge wrote that Musk "appears to have throttled" Grok Bot and noted he gave no details on what changed. TechRadar went further, reporting that Musk intentionally limited users' allowances. TechRadar also said X users reported their meters jumping, for example from 50 percent to 100 percent, while they weren't using Grok Bot, and that one Reddit thread called the change an "indirect rug pull." Those are the outlets' readings and users' reports, not statements from Musk or the company.
Seven days a week. In a separate post later Nov. 1, Musk wrote that the team lands "a few dozen fixes, features and sometimes powers to Bot 7 days a week" and looks at user feedback.
The changelog is still quiet. As of Nov. 2, the official Grok Bot changelog still listed version 0.78.1, from Oct. 27, as its newest entry.
What to do with it
Open Usage & Billing in Settings to check your weekly usage, or ask a Bot how much you've used and when your week resets. If you pay for extra usage, set a monthly on-demand limit in Usage & Billing so a fast-draining week doesn't turn into a surprise bill. The changelog says individual plans can set that limit to None, Fixed or Unlimited.
