Put your Bot on the iPhone Action Button: one press starts a voice chat

How-to · Oct. 20, 2026

Grok Bot owners with an iPhone 15 Pro or later can now start a voice chat with their Bot by pressing the phone's Action Button, the official @bot account on X said Monday, Oct. 19.

"Grok Bot is now one step closer. Set it as your iPhone's Action Button and press it to talk with Bot," @bot posted at 1:40 p.m. CT with a short demo video. By late Tuesday morning, the post had about 15,800 likes, 3,900 bookmarks, and 1.9 million views.

The Action Button is a programmable button on the side of newer iPhones. You pick one action for it, and with this update that action can be a voice chat with your Bot.

How to set it up

@bot posted the steps in a reply about two hours later, at 3:39 p.m. CT:

  1. Update the Grok Bot app on your iPhone to version 1.16 or later.
  2. Open the iPhone's Settings app and choose Action Button.
  3. Swipe to Shortcut.
  4. Choose Grok Bot, then Start Voice Chat.

Then press the Action Button to start talking.

These steps come from @bot's reply on X. Grok Bot's mobile help page did not mention the Action Button as of Tuesday morning. The page does describe the in-app version: choose Start voice chat "when the composer is empty to talk with the Bot live."

Two version numbers are in play. Version 1.16 is the iPhone app. The desktop app is on 0.71.x, so don't look for 1.16 on your Mac or PC.

What you'll see

GG has not tested the button. iPhone in Canada, which described @bot's 13-second demo video, said that after the press the Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped area at the top of the screen, "expands into what looks like a phone call, first showing 'Calling…' and then a running timer with the Bot's name, a mute button and a red end button." The call then shrinks to a small timer while the home screen stays in use, the site said.

What you need

@bot's posts don't mention Android, and they don't say whether a voice chat started this way counts differently toward usage.

Why it's more than a shortcut

A voice chat with your Bot is a conversation with the same Bot that runs your routines and works on its cloud computer. The Grok Bot 0.71.2 release notes, posted to SpaceXAI's changelog Monday, add two voice changes that matter here:

In practice, that means you can press the button on a walk, say what you need, hang up, and check the chat later for the result. If notifications are on, the app tells you when a Bot has "a result, question, or approval request," per the mobile docs. While you're using the desktop app on a Mac or Windows PC, those alerts go to the computer instead.

Try this first

Press the button and give your Bot one small job you'd normally type, such as "Remind me at 4 to call the shop." Then open the app and read what it wrote down. If it got the details wrong, you'll know to slow down or spell out names on the next call.

If you'd rather send a message than talk live, the app also has Start dictation, which the mobile docs list as the way to dictate a message.
