Narrow a Slack phrase before you save the trigger

Tip · Nov. 5, 2026

A Slack phrase trigger is a doorbell tied to words. Every new message that matches starts a real run and spends usage. Save a common word on a busy channel and the Bot will work all day on chatter you never meant to catch.

Pick words people rarely type by accident

Use a multi-word phrase, a project nickname or a product code, not a single everyday word like "help" or "update." Say the phrase out loud and ask whether it shows up in unrelated talk. If it does, make it longer or more specific before you ask the Bot to watch it.

Name the channel, not all of Slack

Tell the Bot which channel to watch. One quiet channel is enough for most watches. "All of Slack" is the wide setting for a phrase so rare that it almost never appears. Open the routine after the Bot saves it and read When to run. It should spell out your phrase and the channel in plain words. If it says something broader than you asked for, choose Edit and tighten it.

Prove it with one harmless sample

Only new messages count, so an old post that already has your phrase will not start a run. Post a short sample that includes the phrase in the watched channel, or open the routine and choose Test. A test does real work. Then read the Bot's chat to confirm the hit looks right. If nothing starts, check that Slack is connected on the Cursor account that owns the Bot, that the routine is not paused and that the sample is new.

Leave the wide net for later

If you later need a second phrase or another channel, add it on purpose after the first watch stays quiet for a few days. Two narrow triggers beat one trigger that fires on every loose match.
