Name a skill in your routine, then fix it in one place
If you have two or three routines doing close to the same job, such as a Monday summary and a Friday summary, you've probably copied the same steps into each one. That works until you want to change a step. Then you have to find every routine and fix each by hand, and it's easy to miss one.
There's a cleaner way. Save the steps once as a skill, then have each routine call that skill by name.
- Save the steps as a skill. Tell your Bot, "Save how you build my weekly summary as a skill." It writes down the steps and gives the skill a name.
- Name the skill in the routine. When you set up or edit a routine, ask the Bot to run that skill. Official docs give this example: "Every weekday at 8:00 AM, run the 'Daily customer risk' skill against the current account list." In chat you can mention a Bot, group, routine or app with @, or just say the skill's name.
- Change the skill, not every routine. Tell each routine to run the skill by name, so a change to the skill doesn't mean rewriting every schedule. Keep the routine's own text short: the schedule, who gets the result and anything that differs from the skill.
A few things to know:
- Skills are available across your Bots. A Bot may still need the relevant app or login, so keep the steps general and put the specifics, such as which inbox or which channel, in the routine.
