Grok Bot, OpenAI's Dots, and Hermes Agent make three different bets
OpenAI's launch of Dots on Sept. 29 means three always-on agent products now compete for the same job: an AI that keeps working after you close the chat. They make different bets on who runs the computer, how many agents you get, and who owns the skills you build.
OpenAI's Dots
OpenAI introduced Dots at its DevDay keynote. Dots run on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model and use their own cloud computer to reach a web browser and more than 4,000 supported apps, The Verge reported.
"This is the real deal version of AI we've always imagined," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said of Dots at the event, according to Axios.
For now, users can create only one Dot, though OpenAI plans to allow more, The Verge reported. OpenAI is also testing "specialist" Dots that companies can set up for specific roles. Conversations with a Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, OpenAI said, according to The Verge.
Dots launched for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, with Enterprise users getting a beta, according to The Indian Express. When a Dot has no assigned task, it does "proactive research" in the background in a read-only mode, so it cannot send messages, change app content, or control the browser on its own, the Indian Express reported.
Grok Bot
SpaceXAI's Grok Bot lets each user work with many named Bots at once, according to the Grok Bot site. All of a user's Bots share one persistent cloud computer, including its files, browser, and logins, according to SpaceXAI's documentation. Bots "have their own computer, so they can work inside your apps and tools," and "run in parallel, 24/7, even when your laptop is closed," the site says.
Since Dots launched, SpaceXAI has added Primary Bot, which offers to take on work without being asked and routes jobs to a user's other Bots. Team Bots, in public beta since Sept. 28 for Teams and Enterprise plans, let a whole team share one Bot while keeping each person's chats private. Grok Bot comes with eligible Cursor and Grok plans, which include weekly usage. Extra usage is billed by token cost, according to SpaceXAI.
Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is Nous Research's open-source agent, released under the MIT license. Users run it themselves on a $5 virtual private server, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure that "costs nearly nothing when idle," according to its GitHub page. It works with many model providers, including Nous Portal, OpenRouter, and OpenAI, and talks to users through Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, and a command-line terminal.
Its signature feature is what the project calls a built-in learning loop. Hermes creates skills from experience, improves them during use, and is compatible with the agentskills.io open standard, according to the project. Version 0.15.0, released May 28, turned its Kanban board into a multi-agent platform and added a round of xAI features, including a web search plugin, according to the release notes.
How they differ, side by side
| Grok Bot | OpenAI Dots | Hermes Agent | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | SpaceXAI | OpenAI | Nous Research |
| Who runs the computer | SpaceXAI cloud, one shared computer per user | OpenAI cloud | You (server, GPU cluster, or serverless) |
| How many agents | Many named Bots | One to start | Multi-agent Kanban board |
| Model | Managed by Cursor (no model picker) | GPT-6 Astra | Your choice of provider |
| Skills | Teach a task (saved as routines); team marketplace for skills and plugins | Learns preferences; specialist Dots in testing | Self-written skills, agentskills.io standard |
| Price model | Included with eligible Cursor and Grok plans | ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium; Enterprise beta | Free software; you pay for models and hosting |
What it means if you build bots
Grok Bot and Dots are hosted products: the company runs the computer, and you build inside its rules. Hermes is software you own: more setup, more control, and your skills live in an open format.
That last point matters for anyone building templates. A skill written for one product does not automatically run in another. Converting a Grok Bot's description, skills, and routines into a Hermes setup, or back, is real work.
