Musk says Grok Bot will use "the best back end model" per task
Grok Bot will use whichever AI model fits each task best, including outside models such as Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and Suno, Elon Musk said in a post on X early Wednesday.
"Important note regarding Grok @Bot," Musk wrote at 1:46 a.m. CT Oct. 7. "Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome."
The post had about 47.3 million views and 5,300 replies by about noon CT.
Musk did not say when the change starts, which tasks would go to which model, or whether pricing or usage limits would change. SpaceXAI's official Grok Bot changelog did list a new release Wednesday, version 0.68.1, but it covers slide decks and chat colors and does not mention Claude, Midjourney, or Suno. GG found no post about the change on SpaceXAI's news page or from the @bot account as of about 7:50 a.m. CT.
The "back end model" is the AI model that does the thinking behind a bot's replies. Today, the bot you talk to in Grok Bot is the front end: its name, job, skills, and routines. Musk's post says the model underneath could change from task to task.
What the named models do
- Claude Opus 5.5 is Anthropic's model built for long-running agentic coding and knowledge work, according to Anthropic's model page. It lists a 1 million-token context window and API prices of $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens.
- Midjourney makes images, and Suno makes music. Musk did not say what Grok Bot would use them for.
SpaceXAI and Anthropic already have a business tie. In May, SpaceXAI announced that it "has signed an agreement with Anthropic to provide access to Colossus 1," its computing cluster, according to x.ai's news page.
How other bot tools handle this
Picking a model yourself is not new in the bot world. Hermes Agent, the open-source agent from Nous Research, works with many model providers, including Nous Portal, OpenRouter, and OpenAI, according to its GitHub page. Musk's post describes Grok Bot choosing the model for you. (Our comparison of Grok Bot, Dots, and Hermes.)
What to do with it
- Don't change anything yet. Nothing has shipped. Watch the official changelog at x.ai/changelog/bot for a version that names the change.
- If your bot handles client, medical, or money data, ask Grok Bot support where routed prompts go and whose data terms apply before you count on it. Our security FAQ covers what's known today.
- Keep your bot's instructions model-neutral. A clear job, a never-do-alone line, and a plain first task should work no matter which model runs underneath. That's the plan card from Basics #1.
